GCHS Volleyball Team Hosting Alumni Game

The Lady Yellow Jacket volleyball squad is hosting a big alumni game Friday at 5:00 in Ricky Richards Gym. Over 40 past players have signed up to play in the event making it more of an alumni tournament. Admission is $2 and the team will have t-shirts and concessions for sale.

Coach Allison Borne is pleased with her team’s progress and the support being shown from the community. She has kept the team busy over the last couple of weeks.

“We went to camp July 24 through 26 at Eagleville. There were 14 teams there including one of last year’s state champs and several really good teams. It was very tough competition. We were 2 and 6 in the week but it was a good building experience for us. All the coaches complimented our girls for their hustle and hard work.

We found what we needed to work on. We had some big plays during the week that show promise for this season. We worked 10-11 in the rotation so there are several that are getting a lot of playing time,” said Coach Borne.

One player in particular has stood out so far and could be one to watch this season.

“We’re seeing big things from junior Whitlee Burnett so far. She had some awesome plays at Eagleville,” complimented the coach.

Abby King is the only senior on the team. Others working into the rotation right now are Summer Shipley, Shawna Worley, Peyton Eads, Megan Haynes, Taylor Floyd, Jaya Barrett, Cassie Nunley and Halie Monroe.

As for the things to work on the coach has some things in her target.

“We need to work our serve reception and positioning on defense. That’s ok to have things to work on right now. By the last day the girls were moving into positions that we weren’t before, we just have to make the plays,” said Borne.

The team scrimmage the super tough class AAA Soddy Daisy this last Thursday and learned more areas they want to work on. They traveled to Tullahoma on Tuesday.

The Lady Jackets hosted the first GCHS Co-Ed Tournament on July 27 as a fundraiser. It was a big success raising almost $1400.

“We had 10 teams in it. So many people participated and came out to watch. We had a lot express how much they loved the event and wanted us to have more of them and maybe even a league. Everything went great and we had a lot of help,” said Coach Borne.

Team Childers and The Average Joes were the co-champions of the event. Plaques and t-shirts went to the winning teams.

“We’re seeing improvements every day with this team. It’s going to be a fun year. Our JV team is also working very hard and improving every day too. We’re going to have a lot of JV games this year so they’re going to see plenty of action,” said Coach Borne.
