Monday was the first day of full pad practice for Nick Bryant’s Yellow Jackets where he saw 42 dressed out and getting ready for the 2013 season. The team will have two a day practices this week and make a strong push to get a lot accomplished.
“We’re starting the two a day’s tomorrow and keep them out here all day kind of like a school day. We’re going to practice them hard. We’re going to try and get special teams in right away. It wasn’t a bad day of practice the first day. We looked pretty good offensively early and then struggled toward the end. We got sloppy when we got tired but that’s to be expected.
Defense was a little better than expected. Sometimes it’s a little difficult to keep picking up on the Wing-T offense. We’ve got to keep our ends from coming up field more,” said Coach Bryant Monday at the field house.
The coach was happy with the numbers out and the effort being made.
“We’ve got good numbers. The majority of kids are here. We’ve still got a couple out on vacation. We had 42 here today, dressed out. So we’re looking pretty good number wise too,” said Bryant.
The Jackets scrimmage twice more before the Jamboree. They travel to Whitwell August 6, for a 6:00 p.m. start and on August 13, they travel to Coffee County for a 5:00 p.m. start.
Then of course the annual Sequatchie Valley Jamboree is August 16 at Grundy with all the traditional foes coming to show off their teams before the season starts. Several of the teams at the high school will have booths at the event to help raise funds for their seasons.
August 7 will be picture day for all football and all fall sports at the high school with yearbook and package pictures being made. The GCHS band pictures will also be made that day.
The GCHS Quarterback Club held a meeting Monday night as well and they are working hard to help the team. The sign sale is underway and area businesses can advertise on the field during the season with a sign along the fence. Parents and quarterback club members will be canvassing the community to gather support for the team. They will also host a cleanup day at the field on August 10.
The Kickoff Dinner is set for Monday night August 12 at Grundy County High School at 6:00 p.m. It’s the annual meet and greet for fans and the team, coaches and cheerleaders. It’s also the opportunity for fans to join the Quarterback Club and get items such as season tickets, reserved parking, reserved seats and plenty of Purple and Gold gear to wear to the games. Everyone is encouraged to attend. For more information call Carol Underhill at 931-808-8619 on the quarterback club events.
The time is near Yellow Jacket fans. The team needs your support early and often. Attending the scrimmages, joining the quarterback club, buying a sign, helping with the Jamboree and buying some new Purple and Gold to wear are just some of the ways to support the Yellow Jackets this season. The other is of course to GET OUT TO THE GAME!
