Coach Nick Bryant got his football team in high gear beginning July 8, with the team starting on the field workouts and competing in the 7 on 7 summer passing league games. Grundy played last Thursday against several teams at Finley Stadium at UTC with positive results.

“Last Thursday, July 11, was fun day at Finley Stadium for the 7 on 7 passing league games. Many teams were there so the offense got to see many different defensive looks as well as the defense preparing for multiply looks by many different offenses. We did very well moving the ball in the air and looked real sharp on just one day of practice because of the rainstorms last week. Many players made big plays for us with many different players scoring touchdowns.

On the defensive side we only had trouble in one game being able to stop LFO running five wide against us. We have not worked on that yet and were caught off guard but the kids adjusted well on the fly and started holding them later during the game. Overall I’m pleased with the performance of the team and look forward to putting the pads on and getting started,” complimented the coach.

Grundy played East Ridge in their first game last week winning 3-1 as in three touchdowns to one. Houston Mainord threw scoring strikes to Dylan Cleek, Alex Nunley and Jesse Goodman. Also in that game Goodman and Trent Hampton picked off Pioneer passes.

In their second game they lost to Sequatchie County 2-1. Dylan Cleek threw to Trent Hampton for Grundy’s score And Kevin Stewart had an interception.

The Jackets lost 4-3 to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in their third game of the day. Mainord hit Goodman once and Cleek twice for scores in the game.

In Grundy’s last game of the day they downed Boyd Buchanan 3-2. Mainord threw scores to Cleek, Goodman and Christian Brown. Cleek also made an interception.

This Monday was the first practice in any kind of gear with the team going helmets only. Tennessee teams can begin full pads workouts on July 29.

“We will continue to lift weights, condition and practice mixing them up in the weeks ahead. The kids have worked very hard in the weight room so far this summer and many have went to different football camps on their own such as the camps at Carson Newman, Vanderbilt, the offensive/defensive camp in Nashville and more. Now it’s time for us to buckle down and push the pace to be ready for this season,” said Coach Bryant.

Today, July 18, Grundy will host a passing league game at 5:00 pm at Crisp Field against Franklin and Coffee Counties.

A meeting is being held this week with team parents and administration to discuss details of hosting the Sequatchie Valley Jamboree August 16. Once those details are hammered out information will be shared with the community on how they can help with that event.
