She was of the Church of Christ faith and was born on March 12, 1926 to Aylor and Maudie Morrison Layne who preceded her in death along with her husband, James Eckerd Brewer; brothers, Raymond Layne and Harold “Cotton” Layne. She is survived by her son, Keith (Anita) Brewer; brother, AJ and wife Joanne Layne; grandchildren, Jerad (Stephanie), Amber (Wesley) and Anderson; great grandchildren, Molly, Lorelai, Lily and Abby. CALDWELL, HERBERT, E., “HERBIE,” 83, of Cumberland Heights Community in Coalmont, and Palmer native passed away peacefully at his home Thursday June 27, 2013. He was a coalminer and retired from Atlas Chemical in Chattanooga. He began playing baseball at the age of 15 and was the pitcher for the Palmer men’s team being an avid baseball fan, hunter and fisherman his whole life. He was a US Army veteran and a Christian attending the Laager Independent Methodist Church. He was born in Flat Branch to Calvin B. and Ida Mae Nunley Caldwell who preceded him in death along with his son, Jeffery Dennis Caldwell; sisters, Beatrice Pickett, Laura Ruehling and Edna Taylor; brothers, Chester, Roy, Robert “Poss” and Howard Caldwell. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Bonnie Cook Caldwell; daughters, Cynthia (Johnny) Green and Patty (Ricky) Brown; sister, Hazel Stotts; grandchildren, John (Misty) Green, Traci (Ronald) Dickerson, Dennis and Terry (Nichelle) Caldwell, Tyler and Dylan Brown; great grandchildren, Nick Green, McKenzie and Kameryn Dickerson, Summer, Jeff and Jeremiah Caldwell; a host of nieces and nephews. LADD, GWENDOLYN, KAY, age 56, of Monteagle, Tennessee, passed away July 6, 2013 at her home, following an extended illness, surrounded by her family. She was born January 31, 1957 to Lawrence and Joyce Kunz Ladd. She was preceded in death by her father Lawrence “Pookie” Ladd and great niece Taylor Nicole Wockasen. Survivors include her mother Joyce Kunz Ladd; sister Stephanie (Ricky) Layne; brothers, Russell (Linna) Ladd, Marlin (Nancy) Ladd; niece Tonya (Tonya) Wockasen; nephew, Cody Layne; great nieces, Kendall and Caillin Ladd, Lauren and Emma Wockasen; and companion David Kopek and his children Stephanie and Christopher Kopek. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Jr. and Christine Anderson Caldwell. GREGORY, AURELIA, DELL, born in Monteagle, TN, married Ernest Hoyt Smith in 1939 and moved to Concord, CA in 1951. In 1955 Aurelia joined the Disabled American Veterans Women’s Auxiliary Chapter 154. A devoted mother, she took great pleasure in many activities throughout the years which included gardening, painting and bowling. She was very talented in her needlework and quilting projects. Aurelia is survived by her loving children and spouses, Mary Elizabeth Tune (Gary) of Visalia, CA, James Boyd Smith (Monia) of Concord, CA, and Aurelia Ann Jewel (David) of Chester, CA. She is the beloved grandmother of 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Aurelia has a twin sister, Geneva Elliott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 1975, and her son Ernest Fletcher Smith in 2001, parents Silas and Mattie Gregory, brothers Collis, O.C., Robert, and Kingley, sisters, Virginia Griswold, Janet Gragson, and Roberta Alexander. A Celebration of Aurelia’s life will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Ouimet Bros., Concord Funeral Chapel, 4125 Clayton Road, Concord, CA. SPENCE, BILLIE, THOMAS, 86, of Huntsville, Texas went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 28, 2013, after a short illness. She was born in 1926 in Tracy City, Tennessee and was the second of five children to Victor Joseph Thomas and Lois Smith Thomas. Her parents preceded her in death, as did her oldest brother, Carl Douglas Thomas and her younger sister, Ruth Thomas Sweeton of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Upon graduating from high school in Tracy City, she moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, during World War II and worked for the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce as an executive secretary. On Valentine’s Day, 1947, Billie met L. Jack Spence, Jr. of Chattanooga, and they married that August and were married almost 66 years, at the time of her death. In addition to her loving husband, Jack, she is survived by her sons, L. Jack Spence, III of Needville, Texas, Michael Thomas Spence of Dallas, Texas, and Douglas Foster Spence of Houston, Texas and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Surviving brothers are J.V. Thomas of Tullahoma and Jack Thomas of Goodlettsville. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13 at First Baptist Church, Huntsville, Texas.
