GILBERT, ERNESTINE, 74, of Gruetli-Laager, TN, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013. She was born in Paynes Cove on February 18, 1939 to Francis M. and Maggie M. Fults Roberts who preceded her in death along with her husband, John Thomas Gilbert; brothers, Lemuel “Pudd,” Leonard and Louie Roberts; sisters, Esther Long, Elene Roberts and Edna Meeks. She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Billy) Thomas; sisters, Elvia Gilbert and Eva Ruth Smith of Silvis, IL and Eula Elizabeth Hrenko, Mentor, OH; a loyal, loving and compassionate caregiver, Donna Solomon, who we appreciated dearly; a host of loving nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, June 15 in Fall Creek Cemetery with Bro. Larry Campbell officiating. FISHER, RICHARD, L., JR., retired USMC, age 82, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away at his home June 12, 2013. He was a Korean War veteran, recently invited to return for a two- week visit to South Korea in 2010 to be honored by the Korean government. He received the National Defense Medal, Purple Heart, United Nations, and the Korean with 3 stars. Upon returning to the states, he completed an engineering degree from Alabama Polytechnical Institute (Auburn University – WAR EAGLE!!). Mr. Fisher is retired from Combustion Engineering and Vetco International, where he was Vice-President for World Wide Manufacturing and Nuclear Research. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard Leroy Fisher, Sr. and DeVera Bauldauf Fisher, two sons, Robert Paul Fisher and Phillip Benedict Fisher, and brother John Dwyer Fisher. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Amy Edwards Fisher; daughters Patricia Fisher, Peggy Helton, and Pamala Joyce Elliott (Bill); son Peter Karl Fisher (Sue); grandchildren, Stacey, Steven, and Stewart Helton, A.J. and Amy Cragar, Sudie and Laura Fisher; friends and neighbors Parrish and Beth Cragar. Funeral services were held Monday, June 17 at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN with Bishop William Millsaps officiating. MOTTERN, LORENE, P., age 93, of Tullahoma, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma. She was born June 6, 1920 in Decherd, the daughter of the late Daniel Patterson and Rosa Ellen (Conry) Patterson. She was employed by AEDC and was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Mottern and sisters, Jewel Partin, Lucile Smith, Elsie Henley, and Margaret Partin. Survivors include daughter, Jackie Mottern of Arlington, TN, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, June 17 at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Steward and Rev. Greer officiating. Interment was in Providence Methodist Church Cemetery in Decherd, TN.  Arrangements were made by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, Winchester, TN.

SHORT, KENNETH, E., “ROOSTER,” age 68, of Cowan, Tennessee, departed this life on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born in Grundy County to the late Jim and Faye Short and was a plumber by trade. His hobbies were working with antique guns and cars and his favorite pass time was spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loving and caring husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his son, Jared Bailey; brothers, James Short and Lacy Short; sisters, Flossy “Jack” Irene Green and Shirley Nunley; and brother-in-law, Shorty Shetters.  He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Joy Short; son, John (Dawn) Bailey all of Cowan, sisters; Sue Shetters of Sherwood and Martina “Teen” (Joe) Sheridan of Sewanee; sister-in-laws, Joyce Short of Cowan and Brenda Short of Tracy City; grandchildren, Kim Bailey (Brad) Stoker, Josh and Jynipher Bailey, Aaron Bailey, Breanna and Gunner Bailey; great grandchildren, Maddy Bailey, Eli Stoker and Jase Bailey; daughter-in-law, Regina Bailey; daughter, Leann Short Rhoton; numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special thank you to James and Melinda Vineyard for all they did for “Rooster,” and to his sister, Sue Shetters for never leaving his and Joy’s side during his illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15 in the Chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Bro. Rudy Wilkerson officiating. MEEKS, LOIS, ELIZABETH, age 60, of Monteagle, TN, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, TN. She is preceded in death by her husband, James “Danny” Meeks; sister, Helen Smith; and brother, Charles Melton. Survivors include her son Aaron (Jill) Meeks, Monteagle, TN; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Monday, June 17 in the Monteagle Cemetery with Brother Tyler McCullough officiating. SCISSOM, BILLY, RAY, age 68, of Jasper, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013 in Grandview Medical Center. He was born at home in rural Marion County, a son of the late Henry Scissom and Maudie Francis Campbell and was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Scissom; sisters, Peggy Ann Scissom and Mable Kilgore; niece, Henrietta Kilgore; wife, Faye Scissom. Billy Ray worked for Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company and had worked in law enforcement as a deputy for the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and as a dispatcher and jailer. Earlier in his life he enjoyed jogging and martial arts. Survivors include his children, Candy Scissom and her husband, John Sowell of Monteagle; son, Billy Ray Scissom, II, of Monteagle; several nieces and nephews. CHILDERS, SUSIE, MAE, age 88, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 in Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee. She was born in Coalmont on September 15, 1924, a daughter of the late Spencer Burton Brown and Nellie Jane Frederick Brown. She married Louie Woodrow Childers and he preceded her in death on April 13, 2008. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Clarence, James, Leon, and Howard Brown; sisters, Mildred Meeks, Annabelle Brown and Nelene Rogers. She was a longtime member of Mt. Ararat Cumberland Methodist Church. Survivors include her children, Bill and his wife, Glenda Childers, Joe Childers, Ronald and his wife, Janice Childers, John and his wife, Becky Childers, all of Tracy City, Phyllis and her husband, A.J. Gulley of Coalmont, Denise and her husband, Kerry Goodwin of Downingtown, PA, Joyce Flury, Lisa and her husband, Leldon Kelley of Tracy City; brothers, Duke and Lewis Brown, both of Coalmont; sister, Iva Jean Church of Kimball; grandchildren, Cheryl Grimes, Eric Childers, Stephanie Flury, Susan and Megan Gulley, David Smith, Spencer and Hannah Childers, Emma and Abigail Childers; great grandchildren, Madelyn and Amelia Steele, Justin and Sydney Grimes, Porter and Declin Smith; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held Monday, June 17 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Lloyd Crisp and Howard Fults conducting the services.  Burial was in Bonny Oak Cemetery.  Online condolences may be made at www.fosterlayfuneralhome.net  Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.  

MEEKS, JAMES, GREGORY, “RED,” age 47, of the Clouse Hill community near Tracy City, TN, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 in Baptist Hospital in Nashville. He was preceded in death by his father, James David Meeks. He was a grandson of Jack and Cleo Meeks, Tommie and Ruby Parson. A NASCAR fan, his favorite driver was Jimmy Johnson and the 48 team. He was also an avid CB radio bug and was known by his CB buddies as “Jazzy.” Survivors include his mother, Ruth Meeks, Tracy City; sister and her husband, Susan and Larry Meeks; nieces, Samantha, Ashley and Haley Meeks; nephews, Jonathan and Dakota Meeks, all of Tracy City; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 19 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Mathew Meeks officiating. Burial was in Clouse Hill Cemetery.
