D is for “Desirable” – S is for “Sunshine”
Yeah for sunshine! Its benefits include: Awakening us early to hear the birds singing; Helping us feel joyful; Warming our skin and giving it a good color; Working its magic with the little garden plants making them grow and produce good food; Making vitamin D in our skin
Yeah for vitamin D! Its benefits include: Helping the pancreas produce insulin; Helping the body use the insulin for maintaining blood sugars; Encouraging the body to absorb and use calcium and phosphorous; Helping to protect even healthy people from genes wanting to cause disease (lots more studies being done on this topic)
At the end of a 17-year study of 400 people in Finland, men and women with higher blood levels of vitamin D had a 40% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes (Oct. 2007 Diabetes Care). We need to be all about preventing diabetes!
The best vitamin D source is through being exposed to a little sunshine each day. Healthy sunshine is before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. Between those hours, do slather on the sunscreen! An early morning walk is a wonderful time to burn a little energy stored in the muscle cells plus get a healthy, free dose of vitamin D!
