This year’s Annual Memorial Service for deceased veterans will be held at Cumberland Funeral Home in Monteagle.
The event, a part of the work of the Grundy County Veterans Society, will start at 3:00 p.m. and last about an hour.
A Roll of Honor, including the names of all veterans who have passed on since last Memorial Day, will be read and survivors of each honoree will be presented a memorial plaque. Those veterans include Larry Anthony, William Cantrell, Russell Demann, Tom Creighton, Robert Gabriel, Jack Green, Carl Gross, Nickie E. Hampton, Charles H. Johnson, John Edward Kilby, Charles Alfred Lawson, Jr., Delbert Meeks, Ricky Allen Meeks, William Miller, Jackson Ray Morgan, Robert Gordan Payne, Eric Petrilla, Joseph Ricketts, Albert Russell, John Aaron Sargent, Thomas Schroeder, Chester Serle, Freeland Terrill, Clarence Timmreck, Robert Thomas, Daniel Kenneth Turley, and Billy Wade Wilson.
A special tribute to MIAs and POWs will also be included in the Memorial Ceremony. Danny Coffelt will hold the invocation and benediction.
“Those who have attended in the past have commented on the solemn and impressive ceremony honoring those who have made sacrifices and rendered service which has contribute to the continuance of our American way of life,” said organizers Y.B. Ashby and Ray Winton. Grundy County has a history of commendable response to the call for patriotic duty and we need to help keep that history and tradition alive.”
The Veterans Society holds two major presentations each year. “We find it necessary to continually emphasize that the Memorial Day Service each year is conducted to honor those veterans who have passed away and that the Veteran’s Day program is for honoring those who are still living,” said Ashby. “If you of a veteran who is still alive whose name was not read on the GCTV program on November 11, please call 779-3462 or 592-9372 and let us know so that veteran can be included this coming Veteran’s Day.”
