Honoring Coach Clay

Posted on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 2:18 pm

Frank Emmett Clay coached baseball at Grundy County High School from 1971 to 1982. After assisting coach Ed Cantrell in 1971, Coach Clay assumed the head coaching duties in 1972.

His teams posted consistent winning records, despite the fact that for much of his tenure baseball had no classification. Grundy County was in the same districts as much larger schools such as Franklin and Coffee County.

Another district foe, Tullahoma, won the state title three times during coach Clay’s stay at Grundy County. Coach Clay’s teams posted victories over each of these teams as well as other perennial powerhouses such as Murfreesboro, Oakland and Lookout Valley.

Coach Clay will be honored at a reunion of all players, managers, and batgirls on Saturday, May 18 at the Pelham ball field at 3:00 p.m.

Everyone who was a part of the Grundy County Baseball Team during Coach Clay’s tenure is invited to attend.
