October 8, 2008 saw the first Southern Middle Tennessee Honor Flight for World War II Veterans leave for a full day’s tour of Washington, DC. World War II Veterans visited “their” World War II Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
The day began at the Winchester Wal-Mart parking lot at 7:00 a.m. and ended in the same location at 2:30 a.m. the next day. All expenses for the trip were funded by donations from organizations like the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 71, Franklin County, and by private donations from individuals who wanted to honor these heroes.
Comments about the flight included:
CMSGT Charles Fryer, (USAF) of Decherd said, “One of the greatest day’s of my life being with my fellow World War II Veterans.”
O.B. Wilkinson, (USN) of Tullahoma said, “Everyone was so kind to us, people would stand up and salute us at the airports, it was a wonderful day.”
Joe Chadwell, (USA) of Estill Springs said, “They sure treated us well, the staff saw to our every need.”
Harold Winstead, (USA) of Manchester said, “All of the monuments were beautiful, every World War II Veteran should go on one of these flights.”
Joe Yokley, (USA) of Winchester said, “I had such a great time, to be with so many other WWII Veterans, and the lunch and dinner were good too.”
Howard Coulson, (USAF) of Cowan said, “The guardians took care of our needs, and we even had a Doctor along to care for us, if needed.”
Glenn King, (USAF) of Monteagle said, “I would not have missed that trip for the world.”
This year the Southern Middle Tennessee Honor Flights for World War II and Korean War Veterans is scheduled for Saturday, (TBA) May 2013.
