Health Check – What’s Your Body Mass Or BMI

The BMI is a fairly reliable indicator of body fatness for most people. It is a better predictor of disease risk than body weight alone. The BMI is the comparison of our weight and height. Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and being overweight are all major concerns in Grundy County according to the latest Health Council report. Being overweight can cause any of them. Since you just can’t open yourself up and look inside your blood vessels for fat and cholesterol, here’s a quick and easy way to assess your risk. Know your BMI and make choices to have it within the normal range.

Find your height along the top of the chart. Then find your weight in pounds along the left side. Find the point in the chart where that column and row meet and you will see your BMI. A BMI of 24 or less is normal; 25-29 is overweight and 30 or more is obese. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. second only to cigarette smoking. There are no magic pills or potions to protect ourselves from this “health hazard.”

Health is like a 3-legged stool of nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle; without one of these legs the stool cannot stand. Setting realistic goals is essential in achieving them. Start by losing 1-2 pounds each week. Simply having healthy, balanced meals (without the hidden sugars and fat) and getting enough exercise are the main “legs” that will help get you on track to weight loss and healthier living.
