Francis Small has been chosen to as “Senior of the Month” at the Monteagle Senior Nutrition Site. She is 101 years old and was born May 23, 1911 in Dickson County, Tennessee, in the Village of Burns with a twin sister, Mary, born ten minutes before her. At seven years old, the family moved to Elora, Tennessee, where she attended school through her freshman year, riding the train to Decherd to finish high school. She attended Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, which was called State Teacher’s College at that time. Her first job was as an elementary school teacher in Mulberry, Tennessee, with a beginning salary of $45 a month. In 1937 she married Urban Shofner Small, Jr., and continued to teach until their daughter, Ann, was born in 1946. After her husband passed away in January 1964, she continued to teach in Mulberry until her retirement in 1976. A few years ago Francis moved to Monteagle to be with her daughter Ann and her two grandchildren, Brian and Shawn. Francis is a regular at the Monteagle Nutrition Site, being an inspiration to all that attend. She seldom ever misses their daily luncheons and every day brings the Site Coordinator peppermint candy. Francis is not only “Senior of the Month,” but she was also chosen as an honorary member of the Senior Site. “We love you with all of our hearts,” said all of the seniors at the site.
