The Jacket men shocked the district with an upset of Notre Dame last week that sent the Irish to clean out their locker room. Grundy came up short against Signal Mountain in the semi-finals as did the Lady Jackets at Notre Dame. The Lady Jackets fell in the consolations Monday at Sequatchie County High to Chattanooga Christian. The boys played Tuesday in the consolations in Dunlap but results were unavailable at press time. The Lady Jackets will play at Livingston Academy in the opening round of the Region 4AA tourney Friday night in Livingston. The men will play at either Livingston or DeKalb County Saturday night on the road. The Lady Jackets fell to 11-19 overall. The men were 8-17 going into Tuesday’s game.
Girls: Notre Dame 44 – Grundy 28
The Lady Irish are big and aggressive in the paint and the Lady Jackets struggled to deal with it in Chattanooga. Notre Dame opened the game with a 12-2 first quarter and Grundy just never recovered. Grundy cut the lead to 20-13 at the half but that was as close as they would get. “We were outsized and we knew that going in. Their post players put on a show and we just couldn’t overcome it. It was just tough all around,” said Coach Julie Davis. Peyton Eads led the Lady Jackets with seven points. Kristin Hill followed with six. Madison Burrows also had six off two threes. Tori Sartain dropped in five. Kelsey Arbuckle and MiKayla Williams had two each.
CCS 37 – Grundy 35
Monday night the Lady Jackets fell in the consolations of the tourney to Chattanooga Christian. Grundy led until just under a minute and a half to go in the third quarter. Down 23-22 at that point the Lady Jackets would lead only one more time 24-23. With the score knotted 24-24 after three CCS would score the first four of the fourth quarter and set the tone for the rest of the contest. The fourth quarter saw several ties but no Grundy leads as the Lady Jackets had to settle for 4th place in the tourney. “We ended up forcing some shots that we didn’t need to. If you look back there’s a million things we could have done. We could have hit our free throws, make box outs when we should have, things like that. I’m disappointed in the game but not in the season at all. They’ve come a tremendous way. Kelsey Arbuckle led Grundy with 10 points. Tori Sartain, Kristin Hill, Madison Burrows and MiKayla Williams all had five each with Burrows and Williams hitting threes. Madison Rogers scored three and Peyton Eads had two.
Boys: Grundy 72 – Notre Dame 68
The Jackets shocked all of Chattanooga in their opening round game of the district defeating Notre Dame at Notre Dame for their first win over the Irish this season. Grundy had lost the two regular season games by a combined 69 points but it did not matter come tourney time. Grundy led 20-19 after one and then used a 19-11 second quarter to turn up the heat. While the Jackets were outscored in each of the last two quarters the Irish could not make up the difference. “What can I say about this team tonight? They came ready to play and believed they could win from tip off. We had some good practices preparing them for what they would be facing tonight and they did great handling everything that Notre Dame gave us. I told them before the game and at halftime that they were going to make a run at us, but all we had to do was to keep our poise and we would be all right. Every player including those that didn’t see the floor played a huge role in the win tonight. It is the biggest win of the season and for the career of these seniors. These guys deserve this and I am proud of each and every one of them. It was a great victory for our program,” said Coach Justin Bryant. Jacob Campbell, Levi Miller and Trevor Hampton led Grundy with 17 points each. Campbell was good for five threes and Miller one. Trevor Rheal pounded in 12 in the paint. Austyn Cooper added nine.
Signal Mountain 61 – Grundy 38
Grundy could not repeat the magic in the semifinals and fell in a tough battle on Signal Mountain Friday night. It was tight for the first half with the Jackets trailing 25-22 at the break. They gave up an 18-4 third quarter and that was their demise. The loss sent them to the consolation game Tuesday night in Dunlap. Senior guard Austyn Cooper injured his foot in the third quarter and that also threw the team off. “We were at a place most people probably didn’t believe we would be tonight. Our guys played hard again, but we just came up short. We had a really good first half only being down by three. We came out early in the third and shots were not falling for us then “Coop” injured his foot and that hurt us too. They were making plays in the third and we were not. I told the guys not to hang their heads, that we still have work to be done. We have come a long way lately and want to continue to play this way,” said Coach Bryant. Jacob Campbell led the Jackets with 12 points all off three pointers. Trevor Hampton followed with nine. Terrince Bramhall added six. Levi Miller had five with a three. Austyn Cooper hit a three. Trevor Rheal added three points.
