The Lady Jackets defeated Signal Mountain Monday night in Coalmont to advance to the semifinals of the District 7AA tournament. They move on to play at Notre Dame Thursday night. Consolations and finals of the tournament will be Monday at Sequatchie County. The Jacket men played at Notre Dame Tuesday night in a boys’ opening round game. The winner of that game advanced while the season ends for the loser. The Lady Jackets split their final two regular season games last week finishing the regular season with a 10-18 overall record and were 5-5 in the district. The men also split and finished 7-16 and 2-8 in the district.
Girls: Sequatchie Co. 68 – Grundy 54
The Lady Jackets came out flat at Dunlap last Thursday and it cost them. The Lady Indians rolled up a 16-9 first quarter and put Grundy in a hole they couldn’t overcome. Sequatchie added two to their lead in the third and five more in the final to win by 14. Junior Macey Meeks who had just recently returned to the lineup re-injured her knee at the start of the game. “We just weren’t focused from the begging of the game. So we had to play catch up the rest of the game and couldn’t overcome. The injury to Macey Meeks distracted us somewhat. It was the very first play of the game on the jump. They got the jump and then Macey went down. I think that had a lot of mental effect because the players were worried about her,” said Coach Julie Davis. Kristin Hill led Grundy with 17 points. Madison Rogers followed with 11. Tori Sartain had nine. Madison Burrows and MiKayla Williams scored seven each with Burrows hitting one three and Williams notching two. Kamie King added two points and Kelsey Arbuckle one.
Grundy 62 – South Pittsburg 15
Friday night Grundy’s girls were determined to win their final regular season home game and win it big obviously. They sank the Lady Pirates who were just no match. Grundy’s defense held South Pittsburg to one point in the first quarter and single digits all night in every quarter. “I was really proud of the girls on Friday. They played their hearts out. They knew it was the last regular season game and they were just playing with a lot of pride,” said Davis. Kristin Hill topped the Lady Jackets again with 15. MiKayla Williams and Madison Burrows scored nine each with Williams nailing one three and Burrows hitting two. Kamie King tossed in eight. Madison Rogers scored six. Harley Davis had five. Tori Sartain notched four. Kelsey Arbuckle, Peyton Eads and Julie Nance added two points each.
Grundy 47 – Signal Mountain 39
Monday night in the first round of the district tournament the Lady Jackets bent but they never broke. Grundy took a 14-7 lead after one quarter and held off the determined Lady Eagles to end their season and advance to face Notre Dame. The game got a little rough at times with the officials letting the girls play but that is to be expected come tournament time. “Tonight it was all about you win and you go on. You lose and your season is over. The girls understood that we had to win one game and then we’re guaranteed at least three more. It was a hard fought game and obviously we didn’t pull far away from them but we did what we needed to,” said the coach. Kristin Hill led one more time with 12 points. Madison Rogers was right behind with 11. MiKayla Williams scored seven with a three. Tori Sartain tossed in five. Kelsey Arbuckle and Madison Burrows scored four each with Burrows hitting a three. Harley Davis and Kamie King had two points each.
Boys: Grundy 73 – Sequatchie Co. 59
Grundy’s hot scoring streak came into play last Thursday night in Dunlap as the Jackets upset the Sequatchie County Indians. Up by one after one Grundy flipped the switch in the second quarter outscoring the Indians 21-10. That would end up being the biggest difference as the Jackets won by 14 in the end. “This is a huge win for the kids and the program. We have been playing great offensively lately and it continued tonight. We had kids giving 110% on the floor tonight. The gym was filled with intensity and our guys fed off that. They told me this is the first time the seniors have beaten Sequatchie. That is big! They really deserve it,” said Coach Justin Bryant. Levi Miller led Grundy with 26 points including a three. Jacob Campbell scored 15 with three threes. Austyn Cooper had eight with two threes. Tanner Smartt and Terrince Bramhall had seven each. Trevor Hampton tossed in six and Trevor Rheal had four.
South Pittsburg 75 – Grundy 62
The offensive explosion was extinguished in the first quarter for Grundy Friday against the Pirates. South Pittsburg opened the game with a 23-9 first quarter and the Jackets had to play catch-up. Grundy gained the lead by half with a 26-10 second quarter but the Pirates prevailed in the second half by five and 10 points respectively over the final two quarters. “First, I want to thank the seniors for all their hard work and dedication to the program. They are a great group of guys. They have really been coming together and we have been playing good basketball as of late. Tonight’s loss was tough especially for the seniors, but we played hard. We had a couple things not go our way late and too many turnovers that cost us the game. I really wished we could’ve pulled it out. It sure was nice to see my dad in the crowd tonight. That was a huge blessing to me personally,” said Coach Bryant. Levi Miller led the way again with 19 points including a three. Austyn Cooper and Trevor Rheal scored eight each. Trevor Hampton, Tanner Smartt and Devan Hampton scored six each with Devan notching his on two threes. Jacob Campbell scored five with a three. Terrince Bramhall also scored five.
