The Yellow Jacket men posted big numbers Monday night pounding Marion
County by 30 points. The Lady Jackets won both games last week as they also defeated Signal Mountain. The girls improved to 9-17 overall and 5-4 in the district. The men are 6-15 and 1-8 in district play.

Tuesday the teams travel to tonight (Thursday) to Dunlap for their final district game starting at 6:00. Friday is senior night against visiting South Pittsburg at 6:00. The district tournament starts next week. Get out and support Grundy County basketball this week!

Girls: Grundy 48 – Signal Mountain 41

The Lady Jackets started out sluggish falling behind 10-6 after one quarter. They flipped the switch with a 16-8 second and outscored Signal Mountain the rest of the way.

“This was a very important game for us. By winning we ensured that we would finish third in the district for the regular season. Signal had their best player back in the lineup and we struggled to stop her. We did the things we needed to do in order to win,” said Coach Julie Davis.

MiKayla Williams led Grundy with 16 points with four threes. Kristin Hill followed with seven. Tori Sartain scored six. Kamie King had five. Kelsey Arbuckle and Mallory Seals scored four each. Madison Burrows, Peyton Eads and Madison Rogers scored two points each.

Monday night the Lady Jackets hosted rivals Marion County and as in many times past the Lady Warriors were no match. Up by three after one Grundy posted a 13-4 second quarter and outscored Marion by eight in the second half to post the 20 point win.

“This game was about pride for Grundy County basketball. This was the third time we’ve faced Marion during the season so we knew that beating them a third time could be difficult. We had a hard time pulling away from them until the fourth quarter. We worked on a few different defenses during this game and we used a few different player combinations. Again in the end we did what we needed to do,” said the coach.

MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets again with 13 points including three treys. Kristin Hill followed with 12. Kelsey Arbuckle was also in double digits with 10. Peyton Eads added six. Tori Sartain and Madison Burrows scored five each with Burrows hitting a three. Macey Meeks and Madison Rogers scored four each. Kamie King added three.

Boys: Signal Mountain 64 – Grundy 52

Grundy did what they’ve done many times this year and got in a hole early going down 14-3. They battled back and played strong the rest of the way but could not overcome the 11 point deficit.

“We played very well. Levi Miller wasn’t able to play as he had strep throat. That hurt us some. Besides that I thought we played well as a team. We struggled scoring the basketball in the first quarter. I think the rest of the way we outscored them,” said Coach Justin Bryant.

Austyn Cooper led the way in this one with 18 points with two threes. Trevor Rheal scored nine. Jacob Campbell hit two threes. Tanner Smartt also had six points. Trevor Hampton tossed in four. Ethan Meeks hit a three. Terrince Bramhall, Devan Hampton and John David Dickerson all scored two points.

Offensively the Jackets were on fire in this one and they were somewhat disappointed they didn’t reach the century mark. Jacob Campbell had a career night and might have notched a school record in boys’ basketball as he hit 10 three pointers on the night. The Jackets and the crowd enjoyed the huge win over arch rival Marion County. After a 22-22 first quarter the Jackets poured it on outscoring the Warriors by 7, 11 and 12 in the final three quarters.

“My grandma just told me what we need to do is paint Marion County on every team we play. They played significantly hard. I love the effort they gave. To point out one person is hard to do but Jacob Campbell played lights out offensively. That has to be close to a boys’ record of 10 three pointers in a game. It was an outstanding effort from everybody in this one,” said Bryant.

Jacob Campbell led the Jackets with 38 points including 10 three pointers. Levi Miller followed with 16 with a three. Austyn Cooper hit for 13 with a three. Hayden Holland also had 13 points. Terrince Bramhall tossed in seven. Chase Rankin hit a three pointer. Brady Meeks scored three while Tanner Smartt and Trevor Rheal added two each.
