The 29th Annual Grundy County Spelling Bee will be held Friday, February 8 at Coalmont Elementary School beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Awards to be presented include the Eighth Annual David Patton Spelling Award, Seventh Annual Louise Geary Layne Courtesy Award, Sixth Annual Y.B. Ashby Teamwork Award, Third Annual Shannon Brown Memorial Award, and the Second Annual Faithful Attendance Award.

Palmer Town Historian David Patton said that, “I’m very proud to be associated with the Grundy County Spelling Bee and these outstanding students. It’s not just about spelling but also about courtesy, teamwork, and good school attendance which make for a well rounded student.”

The Grundy County Spelling Bee has a proud history of students going on to earn college degrees in a variety of professions. Alexis Rollins represented Tracy City Elementary and won the event in 2001, 2002, and 2003. She’s now pursuing an advanced degree in college and her father Barry Rollins of Monteagle says, “If you ask her, she will tell you that she credits much of her success today to her experiences in the Grundy County Spelling Bee.”
