Big Creek Utility District, at the dam in Coalmont, is an official reporting site for the National Weather Service and we measure snow whenever there is a solid and consistent amount on the ground. Otherwise we just record it as a trace amount. With that being said, we had no measurable amount in 2012.
The rainfall total for 2012 in Grundy County was 67.53 inches with January at 7.09 inches, February at 3.35 inches, March at 7.06 inches, April at 1.30 inches, May at 4.18 inches, June at 2.17 inches, July at 13.02 inches, August at 4.76 inches, September at 9.23 inches, October at 4.94 inches, November at 2.09 inches, and December at 8.34 inches.
New Year’s Day had a high of 58 degrees with .06 inches of rain. July 4th had a high of 87 degrees with .16 inches of rain. Labor Day had a high of 71 with .19 inches of rain. Thanksgiving Day 2012 was sunny and dry with a high of 66 degrees and Christmas Day had a high of 50 degrees and 1.12 inches of rain.
February 11 was the coldest day of the year with a low of 12 degrees and a high of only 25. February 12 saw another 12 degree low and a high of 33 degrees.
According to news reports 2012 was the hottest year ever in the contiguous United States (all but Hawaii and Alaska). The hottest day of the year we recorded was 100 degrees on June 29.
The biggest weather event of the year in Grundy County was the August windstorm with hail that hit the northern part of the county knocking out “juice,” destroying gardens, and uprooting countless trees that damaged homes and other buildings. As 2013 begins many fallen trees and limbs from the storm can still be seen in the Gruetli-Laager area.
