Grundy County Health Council received a diabetes grant from the Appalachian Diabetes Control and Translation Project. According to Tonya Garner, Public Health Educator, “The grant is for $40,000 for four years for a total of $160,000 and will assist us in our efforts to prevent diabetes or help residents in controlling their diabetes.”

There are several goals for the grant that will aid in prevention and control of diabetes.  The Health Council hopes to build walking tracks at North Elementary, Coalmont Elementary and the high school and put in place walking programs.  According to Garner, “Exercise is very beneficial in preventing and controlling diabetes so we want to make sure that county residents have safe places to walk without worrying about traffic.” The Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management program will be taught in locations throughout the county so that residents will have easier access to this proven program. “There are many other ways we hope to help Grundy County residents improve their health in the coming years as a result of this grant,” stated Garner.

Grundy County Health Council members Karen Wickham, Emily Partin, Lloyd Carden, Darryl Adams, Sheila Beard, and Tonya Garner will attend a two-day meeting to put together a work plan for implementing the goals of the grant.  Dr. Richard Crespo and Marie Gravely of the Marshall University Center for Rural Health will lead them in putting together their plan. “We are excited about the opportunities this grant will allow us,” said Garner.
