Heritage Center To Open On Saturdays

President Gerald Sitz has announced that the Grundy County Historical Society Board of Directors has voted to establish regular hours for Saturday admission to the Heritage Center Museum from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company Library and Research Center of the Heritage Center will be open on Saturdays only by appointment. The Library Curator, Janelle Taylor, should be contacted relative to Saturday use of the Library and Research Center. The Heritage Center Museum and Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company Library and Research Center are also open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The extension of regular hours on Saturdays for the museum has been in response to a recommendation of representatives of Appalachian Regional Commission to provide service to the public during weekends when many from outside the local area commonly plan excursion trips. In addition Saturday evenings will enable persons on the plateau who work during the week to enjoy the museum on weekends.

In addition to regular Saturday hours there are monthly presentations at the Heritage Center one Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. each month. They are open to the public free of charge. Announcements of the presentations are published in the Grundy County Herald and are posted on the exterior bulletin board near the Exhibit Hall entrance to the Heritage Center.

A “Festival of Christmas Trees” display opened at the Heritage Center on Monday, December 3. The festival is in the Assembly Hall of the Heritage Center for public viewing through December 31. Area organizations, including Baker’s Chapel Methodist Church, Dutch Maid Bakery, Family and Community Education of the University of Tennessee Extension Service Family Resource Center, Mountain Garden Club, Mountain Heritage Preservation Society, South Cumberland Animal Alliance, several individuals as well as the Heritage Center itself, have contributed a variety of trees and decorations.

There will be a special price during December of $75 for “The Heritage of Grundy County, TN,” published by the Grundy County Historical Society in 2004. The regular price is $84. The book may be purchased at the Heritage Center at 465 Railroad Avenue in Tracy City. Another publication, Dad’s Railroad,” a child’s narrative of the Mountain Goat Railroad by Mary Priestly and illustrated by Jack Baggenstoss, will be available for Christmas delivery. The price is $12 plus tax and shipping.
